Love, Life and the Left-Biography
Displaced from Amritsar during Partition, seventeen-year-old Dilafroze rebuilds her life in Karachi with her mother and sister. There she meets Zain, a young migrant from Delhi, and their love story leads to the birth of Mahnaz in 1949. Shaped by the lingering traumas of displacement, family turmoil, and social inequality, Mahnaz grows increasingly disillusioned with privilege and capitalism. Rejecting a comfortable bourgeois life, she elopes with a radical journalist and joins the Communist Party of Pakistan. Her memoir traces a lifetime of love and activism, from resistance to the Zia dictatorship and exile in China to campaigns for the rights of women and minorities in Pakistan.
